New SDR Courses!

After learning to build analog and digital radios, a number of our customers had the perfectly reasonable question: “What next?” Over the last year, we’ve developed two additional SDR courses that provide an answer.

The first course focuses on reverse engineering RF devices with SDR, with a host of practical exercises and real hardware to attack.

The second shows you how to build SDR-based radio applications, focusing on the especially tricky part of programmatically extracting data from gnuradio flowgraph objects. Getting data out of flowgraphs is a problem that stymies a number of folks, but I’ll save you a ton of time by showing you powerful methods to get this done cleanly.

As with our previous courses, we first taught them to carefully chosen lead customers. Now, after numerous improvements and tweaks, they’re ready for primetime.

You can contact us at paul@factorialabs.com if you’d like to arrange a private training for your organization. We are also planning on two public training sessions this year: one in the greater DC area and a second in Seattle.

Hey want to take the course online, just can’t find the list of the minimum equipment required.
Can you tell what I need to have ready to take the course? I have a linux desktop and a linux laptop
I have a working copy of Gnuradio running on my desktop with hackrf-one receiver. I watched a video where you said Ubuntu 16.? was recommended.
    So just let me know.
    Thanks

Excellent question, Joe. If you have a working install of GNU Radio you should be fine.

To be more specific, we recommend an Intel Core i5 or better, 4th generation or better. The rough AMD equivalent is also fine.

We do have a virtual machine option, which you don’t sound like you’ll need. 4GB of RAM are sufficient for a native Ubuntu install, but you’d want to double that if you did decide to go the VM route.

The example projects will take up a few hundred MB at most of disk space.

The final thing is that you will need a mouse with a middle button and preferably a scroll wheel. The GNU Radio UI uses these for some key operations.

      Thanks for the question!

    Hi Paul,
Would like to enroll online courses and wanted to ask weather all 4 courses under the price 79.99?

    Thanks
    Ara

  3. Paul Clark says:

    Hello Ara

We are still working through the pricing, but there are a few considerations:
    – the $79.99 is an intro price that will go up a bit when we get another few classes in place
    – we expect the digital SDR classes will cost a bit more than the intro classes

Hope this helps. Thanks for the question!

PS We are in the middle of recording the second class right now.

      Thanks Paul.

      It is ok.

Would like to know whether you have some assumption when the courses will be available?

Also if it delays is it possible to take online training in live?

      Would be nice.

      Ara

      1. Paul Clark says:

        Hello Ara

Sorry for the delay. We are hoping for the second analog class to be done in the next month, and for successive digital courses to come out every 1-2 months. We had a bit of a learning curve building these classes at the front end, but are getting faster now.

As for live training, I’ve had other requests for this as well. I’ve did a live training last year through Black Hat, so I know this is feasible. I’m still working through the details, but am planning on a class early Q2.

        Thanks for your interest!

          Thanks Paul.
Actually I am more interested in reverse engineering course and some questions concerning overall the blocks in Gnuradio.
If it will be suitable in time maybe you could let me know whether we can have on demand 2 days course.
          Thanks

Yes, we’ve been asked about reverse engineering material in an on-demand format, and I do think it’s possible. It will take some new development, though, to essentially build software models of the RF devices we’d reverse in hardware during our in-person classes. Unfortunately, this will be a while, as we need to roll out the digital courses and at least one “GNU Radio + Python” course first.

Thanks for your patience, we’re pushing ahead as fast our schedule allows.

  4. Anthony Tavegia says:

    Hi Paul,

Do you think new online classes will be out this calendar year?

    Thank you,
    Tony

    1. Paul Clark says:

Tony – Great to hear from you. The second class should be out this year, but I think the digital material will be 2022 at this point.
